The Shepard Landfill is a municipal landfill that has been in operation since 1972 and has had active landfill gas capture and combustion since late 2005. The LFG is collected from vertical wells installed in closed areas of the landfill and the biocell and combusted in a reciprocating engine or enclosed flare. Prior to this project there was no LFG capture. The Project reduces the amount of methane released to the atmosphere from the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste and also provides renewable electricity.
