The management of land using zero tillage results in reduced fossil fuel use by farm equipment, reduced fossil fuel use for the production of fertilizer and other amendments, and a decrease in the amount of soil carbon and nitrogen that is released to atmosphere. The technology involves reduced/ zero tillage according to Protocol according to equipment configuration and number of passes.
The conditions prior to implementation primarily consisted of more aggressive tillage and seeding practices involving significantly higher soil disturbance events.
Improvements made include new equipment technologies which significantly reduce soil disturbance, improved placement technology involving plant nutrition products and seed, and reduced passes over the field.
Tillage management practices are not regulated in the province of Alberta and the activity has been undertaken voluntarily by farmers as part of this project. These practices are not required by law and are done on a voluntarily basis and are thus additional. All subprojects in this project are employing reduced or zero tillage technology.
Shifting from conventional farming to conservation cropping can increase carbon sequestered in the soil. This results in reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the atmosphere and lower nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions resulting from less soil disturbance. Fewer passes on a farm field reduces fossil fuel emissions from farm equipment further helping to lower greenhouse gas footprint for the farm.
