Spyhill Phase 1 Soil Vapour and Landfill Gas Extraction and Combustion
3381-2894
The project reduces GHG emissions by capturing soil vapour, which contains LFG-derived methane, and LFG from Phase 1 area of the Spyhill Landfill and combusting/oxidizing 99% of the methane into carbon dioxide. The Spyhill SVE system, which serves this area, includes 19 SVE wells, a thermal oxidizer and associated piping and ancillaries. This section of the landfill received waste from 1968 through 1996. While not equipped with engineered liners, much of it sits on natural clay till. This area did not have any system to collect and treat methane generated from waste in-place before the installation of the SVE system. The SVE system was installed and commissioned in August 2012 to prevent NMVOCs and methane contaminated soil vapour from migrating beyond the landfill footprint and site boundaries. Vapour extraction is achieved using one of the two blowers, each equipped with a variable frequency drive. The blower system creates suction, drawing the soil vapour through four sub-headers into a main header, which delivers it to the thermal oxidizer. When operating at a stack temperature of at least 788 ºC, the thermal oxidizer can remove at least 99% of NMVOCs and methane. Due to the low methane content and caloric value of the soil vapor, natural gas is required as a supplemental and pilot fuel to maintain stable performance of the thermal oxidizer, contributing to both operational costs and GHG emissions. In 2023, an investigation was conducted to explore the potential of replacing or partially replacing natural gas with LFG. The preliminary plan is to install seven LFG wells and associated piping to increase the methane content of the feed flow, reducing natural gas consumption. This planned expansion is expected to be completed in 2025. Moisture that condenses in the soil vapour and LFG capture system is collected in a condensate storage tank, which is regularly removed by a leachate truck and treated as leachate.
