Cancarb is a medium Thermal Carbon Black producer located in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The company employs 80 fulltime technical individuals. Cancarb produces thermal carbon through an endothermic chemical reaction where methane is decomposed into reformed gas, predominantly hydrogen, and carbon. The carbon is refined for sale and the reformed gas is used to produce heat for continuation of the chemical reaction. The plant consists of 5 production units capable of producing 45,000 tonnes per annum. Cancarb's feedstock is natural gas and is supplied by Medicine Hat and TransCanada Corporation. The heat not used for continuation of the reaction (referred to as waste heat) is captured and utilized to produce electricity in a waste heat recovery plant (WHRP). The power plant capacity is 27.5 MWh under normal operating conditions.
