Viking B Phase 1 EOR Project
The project involves injection of carbon dioxide into a depleted low pressure, low productivity oil reservoir to improve productivity in a process known as enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The injected CO2 improves the ultimate recovery of oil through a combination of repressuring and miscible processes. Repressuring the reservoir initially adds a drive/displacement mechanism that provides energy within the reservoir to allow to fluids to flow towards the production wells. The miscible process is when the reservoir fluids absorb the CO2 as pressure increases, swelling the fluid and improving viscosity characteristics. This leads to a substantial increase in field productivity. Any CO2 that is produced in the project will be separated from any produced oil and recycled back into the reservoir.
The carbon dioxide that remains in the reservoir when the EOR project is complete will be permanently sequestered in the reservoir.
