Landfill gas (LFG) is collected and destroyed to produce useful electricity and heat that is used on site. Excess electricity is used by other Aquatera facillities or the City of Grande Prairie. Combustion of the methane converts it to carbon dioxide (and water), which reduces the total GHGs released to the atmosphere. This methane would otherwise have been released directly to the atmosphere as there is no regulatory requirement for LFG collection. The electricity generated will also replace the use of higher GHG intensity electricity from the Alberta grid and the heat produced will offset natural gas heating requirements in the baseline.
