The baseline condition for harvesting practices consists of the traditional full tree harvest system with tree length hauling which is still practiced throughout Alberta. The project condition consists of the application of portable chipping technology that replaces centralized wood room chipping, requires less wood handling, and results in 20% uplift in tree utilization with a corresponding reduction in harvest debris disposal. In the 2002 harvest season a pilot portable chipping program was implemented. Success of the pilot program lead to a rapid expansion of portable chipping, and full implementation of portable chipping was achieved in 2005 (project start)
